| Compact, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 6 feet in height and about 4 feet in width. Oval leaves are purplish when new, turning green with age. Covered with profuse, mildly fragrant white flowers in spring. Edible purple-black, extremely sweet fruits are abundant. Excellent eaten fresh, used for pies, or jams and jellies. Also attracts wildlife. Because roots are not aggressive and shade is not dense, this lovely plant is a superb choice for a perennial border or entryway. Flowers are best seen when plant is located in front of dark background such as an evergreen border or wall. |
