| A small deciduous tree, 16 to 23 feet tall, with gray bark, purplish twigs. Silky hairs cover the winter buds. Leaves are dark green and smooth, pale green on the undersides, veins and midrib have fine hairs. Flowers are highly fragrant, 5 inches across, white with purple at the base. Stamens are red. Blooms in March to April. Native to woodlands of Jiangsu Province of China, 800 1000 feet altitude. It is rare and blooms at about 7 years old. |
