| C. occidentalis is a large deciduous tree reaching 40-60 feet height and spread, under cultivation. Growth habit in maturity is broad crowned with ascending arching branches, smaller drooping branchlets. Bark has corky ridges and is grayish. Foliage is light or medium green in the summer, yellowish in fall. Flowers appear in mid to late spring with the leaves, inconspicuous. Fall fruit is an orange-red drupe, 1/3 inch wide, that birds love. It is a very tolerant tree, particularly useful in the prairie and plains areas, but is subject to a few diseases. Native from Quebec and Manitoba to N.Carolina, Alabama. |
