| Blue Mist is a deciduous shrub, generally 2 to 3 feet in height, although it can grow 6 feet tall. It is rounded and spreading in form, also suckers and forms colonies, though a slow grower. Foliage is blue-green, and a little leathery. The fall colors are brilliant yellow, orange and scarlet. The white flowers have no true petals, the showy part is the collection of stamens, blooming in late spring. Sweet scented blooms resemble small bottle brushes. The fruit is a 2 section capsule, not very showy. This shrub likes a well drained, moist, acidic soil and is generally not bothered by pests. Good in combination with rhododendrons, and azaleas. Native to the Southeastern United States, introduced into cultivation in 1765.
Several good cultivars are available. |
