|Erect perennial with medium green leaves, large and palmate, with lance-shaped leaflets to 5 inches long. Grown for their brilliant blue, purple, or reddish sweet pea shaped, 6 to 24 inch long flowers spikes in spring and early summer. Wonderful cottage garden additions, eye-catching when planted in large masses. Other than requiring good drainage, not fussy about soil. Can start from seed in winter or early spring. Native to the Pacific Northwest and an important ancestor to many garden hybrid lupines.
