| Acer macrophyllum is a large maple, 45 to 75 feet tall, occasionally 100 feet, though usually smaller under cultivation. The trunk can reach 3 to 4 feet in diameter. Upright growth habit, older specimens assume a more rounded shape. Bark has flat platelets, gray to red-brown. Summer foliage is glossy green, assuming yellow-orange fall colors. Yellow fragrant 1/3-inch wide flowers appear in late spring on 4- to 8-inch racemes, with the leaves. Fruit is a winged samara, 1 1/2-inch wide, angled, covered with brown furry hairs. Prefers the cool, moist climate of the Pacific Northwest. Native from Alaska to California. |
