| Du Pont is a semi-evergreen, depending on climate. It is a compact, dense, rounded shrub reaching 10 feet. This variety is fast growing and does well as a hedge, screen, or sheared as a formal plant. In summer the foliage is a good dark green, but winter tends to fade and burn the leaves, resulting in a bedraggled look. The small flowers appear in late summer, are greenish-white, in 1 1/2 to 4 inch cymes. Bees are attracted to the flowers in great numbers, so it is best not to place it near a patio or outdoor seating area. In late fall the pinkish fruit capsules appear, opening up to expose the orange seeds. Good for mass planting. It is not as susceptible to scale as other members of the genus. Native to China, introduced in 1860. |
