Pyracantha coccinea

| Pyracantha coccinea is a semi-evergreen or evergreen shrub depending on climate. It has an open habit, and stiff, thorny branches, and must be kept well pruned to keep contained, can be pruned anytime.
Foliage is dark green in summer, tends to brown in cold, unprotected sites. Small, white flowers bloom in mid to late spring on corymbs, completely covering the shrub. The fruit is a small orange pome, 1/4 inches wide, fall ripening, remains on shrub through winter, it is the main ornamental aspect of the plant.
Once established it does not like to be moved, can make a good container candidate. Diseases that may affect this plant include: various blights, especially fireblight, scab, aphids lace bug and scale. Good for espalier, hedge, or barrier. Many cultivars have been made available. |
