Cucumis melo
( Armenian Cucumber Melon )
| 'Armenian Cucumber', also known as 'Snake' Melon is one of the oldest available heirlooms, introduced in Italy from Armenia in the 1400's. It is often mistaken for a cucumber, but will not cross with them. These fruits can grow 3 feet long and 2-3 inches in diameter. It's skin is pale green, and the flesh is greenish white. The melon coils around itself like a snake as it grows. In cookery, it can be treated like a cucumber. Melons can be a challenge to grow, so dependant are they on good soil and hot weather. They can be difficult to grow outside the region in which they were developed. Starting them in pots can also be useful, as the roots will be less disturbed by transplanting. |
| Important Info : Baking hot, sandy soil, is generally a good bet for improving your crop. It is useful to have a cold frame to get the plants going early. |
