| Red Cascade is a large, deciduous shrub or small tree. It is narrow and upright when young, rounding and broadening with age. The leaves are dullish green in summer, but pretty yellow-green to reddish purple in fall. The late spring flowers are rather inconspicuous, small and yellowish green; the fruit is the primary ornamental feature of this plant, appearing in the fall. Abundantly produced, red, 4 chambered, dehiscent capsules open to expose brilliant orange seeds. Unfortunately they are subject to a variety of diseases, the most devastating of which is scale. They are useful plants as screens, mass plantings and groups. Native to Europe and western Asia, they have escaped from cultivation in the U.S. |
