| Picea omorika is a tall, slender, evergreen spruce that is very slow growing; it may take 50 years to attain maximum size. It has a graceful form with short, drooping branches. Needles are dark green with two white stomatic lines on the undersides. Female cones are dark blue-black when young, cinnamon colored in maturity, 1 to 2 inches long. Prefers deep, rich, well-drained soil. Can grow on both limestone and on acidic peat soil. Needs protection from strong winds, somewhat pollution tolerant, one of the more adaptable spruces. Can get aphids, budworm and borers. Good specimen tree, might be good for boulevard planting in some areas.
'Gnom' is a dense, widely conical, dwarf shrub. |
