Zelkova serrata
( Village Green Japanese Zelkova )
| 'Village Green' grows quickly, and is quite resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. Leaves turn red in fall.
Z serrata is a large deciduous tree, reaching 50-80 feet tall. Growth habit is vase-shaped, medium growing. Bark in youth is cherry-like, in mature trees it exfoliates in patches giving the tree an attractive mottled appearance. Summer foliage is dark green, orange-yellow to reddish purple in fall. Flowers are inconspicuous. It is very wind and drought tolerant once it is established. Prune in the fall. Resistant to Dutch Elm disease, but subject to some of the other pests that elms are. A very handsome specimen tree for large areas, street planting and as a shade tree. Various cultivars have been developed. |
