| 'Italian Prune' or 'Fellenburg' has sweet, medium-sized fruit, purplish black, late to midseason. Excellent fresh or for canning or drying. Careful, early training and annual pruning and shaping are required to insure healthy and productive trees.
European plum trees grow 15 to 20 feet tall with a somewhat wider spread. Fruit ranges in color from green-yellow to almost black. A higher sugar content makes it possible to sun-dry the fruit without having it ferment at the pit.
They are late bloomers and are better adapted to areas with late frosts or cool, rainy, spring weather.
Plums grow in many soil types but do best in fertile, well-drained soil. Prune to avoid formation of V-crotches. Once mature, trees will require little pruning. |
