Morus alba
( Pendula White Mulberry )
| 'Pendula' is an interesting tree, with slender, pendulous branches, and gnarled, twisted growth habit. It is often in evidence in older landscapes, and can reach 30 to 50 feet in height.
The highly interwoven twiggy branches give it an untidy appearance. Bark is a light orange-brown, foliage varies from yellow-green to dark green in summer, yellow in fall. The early spring flowers are not showy; small greenish catkins 1/2 inches long on the females, the males slightly longer. The mulberries are pinkish white to violet drupes, quite sweet, and birds love them, early summer fruit. Withstands drought, salt, but prefers a well drained moist soil. Subject to a variety of diseases, often infested with many pests in the southern U.S. Native to China, it was originally imported for the silkworm industry, it has now escaped and naturalized in many areas. Several cultivated varieties are available with superior traits. |
| Important Info : Fast growing weedy tree, try selecting a cultivar. |
